Review: Siam Thai and Teppan-Yaki Restaurant, Chester

This was my first visit to this restaurant on City Road in Chester. I phoned to make a reservation, having been recommended by a good friend, whereby the call was dealt with in a friendly and professional manner and the booking successfully made.

We arrived at the restaurant a few mins early and was greeted with a friendly smile and told our table was ready, at which point we were led upstairs to the Thai part of the restaurant to our reserved table.

There were plenty of people dining, which gave a good atmosphere, however it was 7.15pm on a Saturday, so for me a good indicator of things to come, and I wasn't disappointed.

The decor was traditional, we were greeted by a trio of elephants, and our table was a good size for two people. The only negative was the lack of proper blinds on the windows. They were bamboo and didn't block the sun out, which was a little bit of an issue as it was shining right in my face.

We were greeted by a friendly waiter who took our drinks order and gave us menus to look at.

The was an extensive range and variety to choose from.

My friend and I decided to share a Platter for Two as a starter. When this arrives my mouth started watering - it looked delicious! Prawn Toast, Chicken Satay, Crispy Seaweed to name a few items.

The starter was very tasty and I could have quite easily grazed on this all night .... however it was main course time. I had ordered Pineapple Red Thai Curry (beef) and my friend the Yellow Thai Curry (chicken) with Fragrant Steamed Rice to share.

It was piping hot and we didn't wait long for this to arrive. It was extremely flavoursome and the rice was sticky as you'd expect - I can never get mine like that!

Everything about the main course was as delicious as the starter. I was amazed that they put grapes in a curry but it really worked! I didn't want my plate to empty it was that good.

We had both ordered white wine which arrived promptly and chilled just enough - not too cold.

We weren't bombarded with "is everything alright" we were asked this just the once, which I actually prefer.

There were a couple of birthdays being celebrated that night as the lights were dimmed, which was a little alarming the first time it happened (we knew what was coming the second time) but everyone sang Happy Birthday and gongs were played and cakes were brought - it all added to the atmosphere.

We did struggle to catch the attention of the waiter/waitress as they were so busy resetting tables etc that we did wait a little while before we were able to ask for some water to be brought and then the bill, but this didn't detract from a very enjoyable experience.

I will definitely be returning to this restaurant, it was very friendly, the food was extremely good and it represented great value for money. Great work Siam! 8/10
